A Geographer Who Walks the Talk

From university research to practical trail expertise

Marek’s journey into the Moravian landscape started at Masaryk University in Brno, where he studied Physical Geography. But it wasn’t just lectures and textbooks — most weekends you’d find him out exploring the limestone karst formations that make this region so geologically unique. That combination of academic understanding and hands-on exploration became the foundation for everything he does today.

After university, he didn’t go the typical research route. Instead, he spent the next 14 years doing something rarer: actually surveying and documenting hiking routes. He’s personally walked over 200 distinct trails across the Brno region, catalogued cave approaches, mapped seasonal water conditions, and identified which paths are safe for different skill levels. That’s not theory. That’s real work on real terrain.

The breakthrough came in 2015. Marek’s detailed cave approach guides for the Moravian Karst caught the attention of the Czech Speleological Society, and suddenly people recognized him as the person who actually understood safe cave access. It wasn’t fame — it was credibility. The kind you earn by spending years getting it right.

What drives Marek is straightforward: he believes that well-researched, accessible information empowers visitors to experience these landscapes responsibly. Too many hiking guides oversimplify or skip the important details. He doesn’t. Whether it’s explaining why limestone caves form the way they do, or warning about specific hazards on a particular trail, he bridges the gap between what scientists know and what hikers actually need to understand.

Areas of Specialization

Deep knowledge across the Brno hiking landscape

Moravian Karst Cave Systems

Safe approaches to major cave entrances, geological formation explanations, seasonal considerations. He’s documented the safest routes to Punkva Caves, Katerina Cave, and lesser-known limestone formations.

Podyjí National Park Trails

Multi-route itineraries, river valley ecology, seasonal wildflower locations. Over 40 distinct day routes across the Dyje River gorge, with detailed difficulty ratings and water crossing information.

Svratka River Ecosystem

Riverside walking routes, riparian habitat interpretation, water level considerations. Knows the Svratka Valley like few others — from urban paths near Brno to wilderness stretches downstream.

Babí lom Viewpoints

Scenic overlook access routes, optimal viewing times, geological interpretation of the limestone quarry. The best spots, clearest sightlines, and the geological story behind what you’re looking at.

His Approach to Hiking Education

Marek doesn’t write hiking guides like most people do. He doesn’t just list trailheads and elevation gains. Instead, he’s obsessed with answering the questions that actually matter when you’re standing at the start of a trail:

  • Is this route safe right now, given current conditions?
  • What will I actually see, and what geological processes created it?
  • What wildlife should I expect, and how do I avoid disturbing it?
  • What are the real risks, and how do I mitigate them?
  • How does this fit into the bigger picture of the landscape?

That’s why he partners with local conservation groups. That’s why he updates guides seasonally. That’s why he includes details that other guides ignore. It’s the difference between a checklist and genuine preparation.

“Well-researched, accessible information empowers visitors to experience these landscapes responsibly while respecting their ecological fragility. That’s not optional — it’s essential.”
